Ordinary Ghosts by Eireann Corrigan
Couldn't get into this story AT ALL. Took two weeks to read 100 pages and decided that at least in my book, it's definitely NOT Thumbs Up caliber. NAY.
Drumroll, please.... this one may actually be my first YAY. Emil's narration made me laugh out loud, and if you hang in 'til the end, you get a couple of back-to-back wallops that pack an unexpected punch in a book that is otherwise not heavy.
I enjoyed Ordinary Ghosts - enough to think it might make the top 20. I'd like to hear from male readers if they think Eireann Corrigan (female) captured Emil's voice. I think Emil's internal commentary is funny, but I'd like to know if it feels genuine to men/boys. There are a few scenes that would make good book talks without ruining the story - s'mores scene perhaps. The banter between Emil and Soma is entertaining.
I remember having a key that granted unauthorized access and doing some of the same things Emil does. There's an inherent thrill from being somewhere prohibited even when not committing pranks or vandalism while wondering (and wandering) about the ghosts - I liked Emil's concocted backstory and "conversations" with Ruby.
